Visit AssateagueNearby Assateague Island is home to two spectacular parks: Assateague Island National Seashore and Assateague State Park, where visitors can swim on pristine Atlantic ocean beaches, hike nature trails in the dunes, maritime forest, and marsh, and witness living history: the famous Assateague wild horses, which are descended from livestock brought from Europe many years ago.
Throughout the year, you can find hundreds of different birds along the ocean-front, salt marshes, and coastal bays, including Brown Pelicans, Snowy Egrets, Ospreys and many species of shorebird, raptor, waterfowl, and songbird.
Rackliffe House is located just 1/2-mile from the Assateague Island Visitor Center, which features a theater, aquarium, and touch tanks, as well as exhibits about Assateague history, barrier island ecology, and wildlife.
Assateague is a wild and beautiful barrier island with miles of beach, sand dunes and marsh to explore.
