The Rackliffe House Trust will be conducting an archaeology dig on the weekends of October 8th and 15th. The event is free, and the public is invited to attend. Archaeologists will search for long-lost building remains detected during a ground penetrating radar and magnetometry survey in 2018. Rackliffe House is an archaeological site that is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and the building remains, and artifacts recorded on these weekends will enhance the understanding of how people lived and worked at Rackliffe House and the lower eastern shore of Maryland during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Attendees will watch and learn about the archaeology process and help screen soils for artifacts. Please come prepared for outdoor work, wear sturdy shoes, and bring work gloves, bug spray, sunscreen, and water. There will be 2 public sessions each weekend day, a morning session (9-12), and an afternoon session (1-4). Space is limited to 16 people per session.
To reserve your space please visit rackliffehouse.ticketleap.com/rackliffe-house-archaeology-2022/ For further information please contact us at or 410-629-1011 or RackliffeHouse@gmail.com.

You are cordially invited to a preview of the exhibition The Enslaved at Rackliffe House and Worcester County, Maryland: A Local Story.
The afternoon will include guest speakers, a tour of the Rackliffe House, hymns by the Rev. Charles A. Tindley and light refreshments.
This new exhibition covers the time from the colonial period until c. 1870. Public and private records, as well as archaeological evidence, show the vital role that African Americans played. They were the economic engine that helped to create and sustain the wealth of 18th century estates like this one. Many of the names encountered in this exhibition remain in the area today.
